Design Description:
MOD has been appointed to transform “The Majestic”, Penang’s oldest cinema, into a boutique hotel. Inspired by the existing heritage building as well as the region’s rich Asian cinematic culture, we have created a series of sensorial experiences which balance The Majestic’s unique past with its contemporary role as a lifestyle destination.

The vast cinema hall has been transformed into an event space for an array of lifestyle events ranging from movie screenings to car launches and wedding celebrations. The circle seating area is designed as a bistro bar overlooking the cinema hall. The hotel suites have been located in an adjoining row of shop houses and flank a pool with a courtyard lounge. A special suite located in the former projectionist room overlooks the circle bistro and provides playful voyeuristic opportunities to see but not be seen.

Client Testimonial:
“We had previously completed the successful Loke Thye Kee Residences with MOD as the lead designer. We were both pleased and inspired by MOD, and decided to embark on another project in Penang with them. The Majestic Theatre, grand dame of Georgetown’s once vibrant theatre row, was revitalized as a multi-purpose event hall, and with MOD at the design helm, turned out to be the main star on the red carpet.”
