MODERN DAY PRINCESS_ Crafted from Paulownia timber, these jewelry boxes resemble an abstract flower in the process of blooming. Designed to house a single significant item of jewelry, the “Ojo”, or “Princess” boxes are sculptural pieces, which are themselves ornamental and celebratory.
Katto is part of the KYO project where MOD collaborated with 3 Japanese artisans, questioning convention, disturbing the familiarity of the old age tradition, to create a new form of relevance that transcends convention. The goal was to celebrate contemporary design interventions whilst celebrating time honoured craft.

After our Japanese manufacturing counterpart relayed the story of Paulownia Timber’s moniker, the “Princess Tree” (named in honor of Queen Consort Anna Paulownia, daughter of Tsar Paul l), we were inspired to create jewellery vessels for the "modern day princess". These innovative and ambitious vessel designs reveal the jewellery housed inside by folding open 3 petals held in place by an ingenious hidden cloth hinge – a technique that the manufacturer Atusakwa has gained reputation for.
