MODERN DAY EMPEROR_ MOD has designed the Ming 647 chair as a visually arresting showpiece that still functions as a day-today chair. It is versatile and can be used in multiple settings (dining, study or lounge), indoor as well as outdoor. It will be available in two finishes (metallic and powder coated) and in a variety of colours. The Ming 647 range will also include the Ming 647 stool. Inspired by the act of changing states, the Ming 647 chair's starting point is the traditional design of a 700-year-old Ming-Dynasty-era “Bow Back Chair”, a timeless object that is visually grounded and traditionally constructed from solid timber.

Through a process of transmutation, the chair sheds its mass to become visually ephemeral and light. Solid timber is replaced by lightweight steel rods; mitered multi tendon joints give way to spot wielding and the natural lustre of timber is replaced by chroming and powder coating. However, the essence and iconic profile of the Ming chair remain, in spite of having its constituent parts fully substituted.
