
CELEBRATING THE MARK OF THE HAND_ Inspired by the labor intense hand dyeing processes of Wasarasa, the “Dot Dot” fabric series showcases the mark of the hand by meticulously layering multiple colored dots over each other. Each base color is altered slightly when layered over by the next color, a phenomenon only possible when dyed by hand.
Katto is part of the KYO project where MOD collaborated with 3 Japanese artisans, questioning convention, disturbing the familiarity of the old age tradition, to create a new form of relevance that transcends convention. The goal was to celebrate contemporary design interventions whilst celebrating time honoured craft.


"It was shocking how painstaking the process was: layer upon layer of hand-dyeing the hand-mixed paint pigments onto the textile. But the end results, though artful and sophisticated, lacked the ability to convey this laborious and beautiful process. It seemed such a pity and this became the crux of our question, the core thing we wanted to redefine,"
